Well it is official… with the arrival of Standard time we are again in the 'winter' running season here in the GWN (aka Canada)…fun, fun..NOT…Wink

I have still been running outdoors in my Invisible Shoe Huaraches
without socks with a variety of results. To date the coldest temp I have
run in is around 5C. If there is no wind this has not been any more
problematic than arriving home with cold feet after my usual 5K run. A
few times however there has been a significant wind chill factor which
has resulted in some numbness and a degredation of my running stride,
especially on the foot aflicted with morton's neuroma.

Today I experimented with an ankle length sport sock as pictured for
my run. I simply chose a not too thick athletic sock that was also not
too tight so that I could gather some material to accommodate the string
between the toe. I did have to stop once to adjust this 'gather' as I
found the tension in the material was gradually pushing my foot to the
back with my heel at the edge of my huarache. Once adjusted this
combination worked pretty well, with a minimal amount of slide between
my foot and the outsole. I also arrived home with toasty warm feet…Smile

I plan to make one other adjustment by switching to my 6mm
huraraches. This change has to do with the shortening days which will
have me running in low light or at night. In such conditions I find that
the small bits of gravel, ect. that are easily avoided during the day
have become much more problematic. So I think by switching to my 6mm
huaraches, which are otherwise reserved for trail runs or walking on
very hot tarmac in summer should solve this issue.

I am still looking about for other sock options but in the meantime
will continue to experiment with my ankle socks. Of course when it gets
really cold, say -20C or so I am sure to retreat indoors for track runs
but I hope to run at least a bit outdoors all through the winter. I'll
continue to let you all know how it goes.

Hi Jenn,

I tried making my own toe socks, but found that they kept riding up to the front of my sandal.  I am trying to figure out how to cope with winter running also, since I live up in the Rocky Mtns of Colorado.

I did just get a pair of Injinji performance toe socks, in the "original" weight.  They feel great, but I haven't put them to the test yet.  I plan to do that in the next few days, and post it as my first product review on my blog, http://barefootinclined.blogspot.com/

Look forward to hearing how things continue to work out for you this winter.

Got a pair of Injinji and tested them with the huaraches at -2C. I am amazed.

The socks are the Tetrasock Mini-Crew:

http://www.injinji.com/tetrats…..ght_mc.htm

And the huaraches are the 6mm Contact.

My feet were already warm after a 5 mi recovery pace run in my normal trainers. The dust roads are covered with slippery compacted snow and the snow on the ground varies from an inch to 2-3 inches (on the grass parts).

I did simply not expect such an impressive behaviour; The combination of my feet being able to expand naturally and provide a wider support surface for my weight and the rubber of the soles made it easy to move on the very same roads where just some minutes before I had to run with minute care not to slip and fall.

The socks were more than enough for -2C and I would dare
to say that I would be able to use them at -5 / -8 C. At least after a
good warm up.

I even discovered a brand new type of running surface!!! Frozen Cow Dung !!! (yeah we have massive cows grazing freely in our woods, lol).

I love these beasts and I consider it a privilege to run surrounded by huge highlanders… and well, the dung makes up for an interesting workout forcing you to keep your focus on the ground.

Well, I would prefer running on frozen cow dung rather than fresh!

I too, lol.

The dung mounts are so big you could make hill intervals on them XD
