I'm planning on making a pair of huaraches for me & a pair for our three-year old. Does anyone have any experience using huaraches with little kids? She loves going barefoot but we have too many rocks & pointy plants for her (or me) to be comfortable.

We've made a bunch of huaraches for little kids. Basically the same, but make them a tiny (1/4") bit wider near the ankles so there's room for the laces without getting in the way of their feet (though, really, the kids never notice).
Also, for the knot — remove about 1.25" of the core of the lace so you can make a much smaller knot.

I'd wondered about the knot, since they have such small feet. Thanks for the tip!

I just made some huaraches for my 5 and 7 yo – they love them!! Definitely remove the core to make the knot smaller.
Here are my 7 yo pair. She is *very* fashion conscious and has told me that they are simply pretty!

I'm about to buy the 4mm connect kits (with beads) for my 5 year old daughter and myself, and wondered about my 15 month old son. He just started walking (yesterday!) and we're spending more time outside because it's Summer holidays here in Australia. Does anyone have any experience with barefoot shoes for toddlers? If I try to make him some, is there anything I should consider?
Thanks!

Well, he will outgrow them in no time… other than that, I don't know (we do know of people who've made toddler sized shoes, but not something I have a lot of experience with)

Did you end up making some for your toddler? I need sandals for my very active 3.5 YO and 1.5 YO and I'd like something minimalist, but I've heard that open-toed sandals aren't the greatest for toddlers.

I didn't end up making him any for that very reason. In fact, the sandals I made for my daughter weren't a big hit either because she couldn't wear them to school and I found fitting them correctly to be a challenge with 5 year old patience involved. I wore mine every single day, but I ended up getting Volleys (an Aussie classic that's very flat and flexible but enclosed) for the kids. Hope that helps.

Soft Star Shoes & mocassins (www.softstarshoes.com) ! It is all my boy has worn since he could walk, and he's now 6. SS has been making barefoot-style mocs & shoes for kids and adults for 25 yrs, and are handmade in Oregon. I made Invisible Shoe sandals for my boy last summer and he loved them. I have 3 videos under the TYING page, and the video1 shows a pix of him and my feet. I did try the huarache style first for him but he did not like the knot, so i made his in the style I use. In the summer he will hike in both his Soft Stars and his Invisible Shoes if there is a lot of water to go through.

I ended up getting my boys enclosed See Kai Run sandals. I don't know how they compare to huaraches or Soft Star shoes as I haven't seen either IRL, but they are very flexible. One is completely flat and one has a 1/8" heel which isn't ideal but is about as good as I can get. DH doesn't like the look of the Soft Star sandals…hopefully I can get a couple of pairs of the mocs for winter though.

We prefer the Soft Star Rambler style for my boy as he hikes in these all summer, along with everyday wear, and this style keeps the rocks and dirt out. The sandals are the only style that I do not like as he would get rocks inside them. They do have more options for girls, they recently added a Mary Jane style. The playtime is also cute, and you can design your own and pick colors. Our whole family has the mocassins for indoors, and I have the runamoc which i love. They are all handmade in the US, too!
