First off, i really like my huaraches. I didn't buy them necessarily to run in, but it's quite possible that they'll take the place of my trail gloves next spring. I've never been able to wear sandals before and now that i have something that stays on my foot and gives me that barefoot-like experience, i couldn't be happier.
I haven't been able to wear sandals before because i've got cerebral palsy on my right side. I literally NEVER walk heel toe, and when i tried wearing flip-flops before i'd walk right out of them. Shoes weren't much better. I'd stomp so hard that my girlfriend could hear me three isles down in a store. I did that because shoes forced my left foot to walk heel toe and my right one would TRY, and FAIL…LOUDLY. All that awkward motion ended up giving me some serious plantar issues with my "good" foot. I considered good feet or going to a podiatrist, but before i did, i found some websites that said walking barefoot and strengthening your feet would cure most of our common foot injuries. I tried walking around outside every night a bit barefoot and most of the plantar subsided. I ended up liking that so much i started running. Of course, at the time, i was wearing some old walking shoes and ended up with TMTS.
After a couple of months off, i bought some merrell trail gloves. i liked those, but i kinda felt like there was to much structure to them. One way or another i stumbled on to this website and decided to try some connects. I love'em, and now that the weather has turned colder, my right foot grabs to much walking barefoot — causing blisters. Wearing the connects alleviates the blisters while promoting barefoot-like form for me — no heel striking. I thought that was good enough, then just tonight i ended up running about 1.5 miles in my connects and just LOVED the freedom my feet felt. In the trail gloves, they feel constricted and HOT. In the connects, sure i sweat, sure my feet swell, but they sure don't rub up against seams or smell like death when i'm done.
I'm still not sure that i'l be able to run as many miles a day in my connects as i can my trail gloves, but even if i don't, i'm SO happy i found something i can wear everyday, everyWHERE, using my natural walking gait. Thanks for making such an awesome product!
