After buying an Invisible Shoes Classic DIY Barefoot Sandal with Vibram outsole kit and buying a pair of Unshoes Wokova Feather barefoot sandals, I thought I would try making another pair to give me even more of a barefoot feel by buying separate parts from ebay sellers.
I know what I did would not be recommended but I did it just to feel what it would be like to walk in around the home with even less protection on your feet than 4mm without being completely barefoot.
I could even have bought a 0.5mm thickness rubber sheet but felt this may have been too easy to tear when making holes in it to thread the cord through and when under strain when wearing the sandals.
Then to hold them onto my feet so you can barely see the cord by making it transparent and as thin as possible I bought a reel of 1mm thickness clear 'crystal string' elastic:
The nitrile rubber sheet does not give much non-slip protection or traction but I could also have bought a 1mm thickness of vibram rubber soling sheet:
Though this was a lot more expensive than the nitrile rubber sheet.
I'd be interested to know what you thought of my idea and if you've made your own sandals (possibly thinner than 4mm) using separate materials you have found around the home or online and how they compared to buying the genuine products.
Thanks in advance.

There is a good reason Steve created these things and the results of your experiments compared to Steve's products lets you know why. Nothing else to say.

Well I'm sure SOMEONE on this website could at least make SOME attempt to bother to reply and give me their views!!!
After all, this post has had 74 views so far so I'm sure the other 73 people who have viewed this post could at least chip in with their views instead of just looking at my post and not bothering to reply!!!
Otherwise I am just wasting my time to have even bothered to become a member of this forum, let alone write on the forum!!!

Hi Stewe,
I went to eBay to check out soling material before I found Invisible Shoes.
The cause was that I didn't want to use leather straps. Nothing against leather as such but I don't feel comfortable with the idea of wet leather on my feet.
What I found out was rather discouraging: Vibram soling material costs a lot and with nitrile or other rubber sorts you are already over the price of a Huaraches kit… and I'm not including the cords.
I was able to find some decent hemp cords in Germany but you had to buy a full roll (100m or so). I really wouldn't know what to do with this much rope.
Anther drawback of using soling material is that the contact surface with your feet is most surely smooth and this can mean becoming slippery in wet conditions (like here in Holland or in the UK).
Thus, considering all the factors, including price, I preferred to get a ready made kit.
