I would like to work up to ultra distances (50 – 100 miles). I was going to try to do so completely barefoot, but between the weather and my natural tender footedness, I don't think that's going to be a reality anytime soon.
So, I'm considering whether to extend my normal runs (3-4miles barefoot right now) by putting on IS (invisible shoes) towards the end or by running in IS at the start and then taking them off for the last few miles. I'd like to keep my feet conditioned so that I can gradually extend my completely barefoot portion of the run and, perhaps someday actually run trails or and ultra barefoot.
However, I think it would be better to get on to longer distances quicker with IS than taking another few years to work up to it.
I'd be interested in any thoughts or opinions on whether going bare at the beginning or ending of the run would be better (I'm thinking end of run right now but I'm not completely sold on that). Also, any advice in general on working towards an ultra distance. My current plan is just to gradually increase my distances and throw in a trail run every week (there's a park that an annual ultra is held at near where I live and I can run there on the same terrain that my first actual ultra will probably be held on).
I've run for years off and on and I've run up to half-marathon distances before with traditional shoes. I've never really tried running longer distances but I'm looking forward to trying.
Thanks,
Kelly
