I am right now training for a 33 mile trail race in October. I plan on running in my Huaraches. This will be my longest trail race yet. I hope i look like a total freak.

Has anyone else ventured into long distance running in your Huaraches?

We've had a bunch of Invisible Shoe wearers do ultra-marathons (everything from 30-100 miles). We'll see if any of them see this post and chime in.

Yes, I did about 10 days ago my first ultra in huaraches. I ran 58 km.  I am from Romania and we are using the metric system here. That should be about 36 miles. But  it was not a trail running, I ran almost the whole distance on the road. Just for myself, not within a race. I was curious to see how the huaraches behaved on longer distances. Now I know: they do quite a nice job. No wonder. No problems whatsoever with the sandals. Just love them. I started testing them in January and in May I dropped my running shoes completely and let my feet re-learn the art of running (by the way – thanks Steven for the nice job with this website).

Matt, if there is any question you might want to ask, shoot it and I'll do my best to answer it.

I would like to work up to ultra distances (50 – 100 miles). I was going to try to do so completely barefoot, but between the weather and my natural tender footedness, I don't think that's going to be a reality anytime soon.

So, I'm considering whether to extend my normal runs (3-4miles barefoot right now) by putting on IS (invisible shoes) towards the end or by running in IS at the start and then taking them off for the last few miles. I'd like to keep my feet conditioned so that I can gradually extend my completely barefoot portion of the run and, perhaps someday actually run trails or and ultra barefoot.

However, I think it would be better to get on to longer distances quicker with IS than taking another few years to work up to it.

I'd be interested in any thoughts or opinions on whether going bare at the beginning or ending of the run would be better (I'm thinking end of run right now but I'm not completely sold on that). Also, any advice in general on working towards an ultra distance. My current plan is just to gradually increase my distances and throw in a trail run every week (there's a park that an annual ultra is held at near where I live and I can run there on the same terrain that my first actual ultra will probably be held on).

I've run for years off and on and I've run up to half-marathon distances before with traditional shoes. I've never really tried running longer distances but I'm looking forward to trying.

Thanks,

Kelly

I ran a 50k in Merrell Trail Gloves in April and they worked great for me.

I'm planning to run a 50 miler next spring.  I just ordered a pair of the 6mm Contacts and I'm hoping to wear those in that race.
